No, it is sound advice, when the target person for the advice is a  
complete unknown. However, this is not a noisy forum. The people that  
subscribe to this list seem to be geniune, respectful, thoughtful  
types whether they are professional techs or amateurs, so I think the  
benefit of the doubt applies.
I for one am self-taught at this stuff, and appreciate enormously the  
generosity and patience of all the professionals here.
Their help has enabled me to fix all manner of synths, samplers, drum  
machines (yes, some of these considered vintage classics) over many  
years.
