Using Reaktor Core you can get quite far. It's a more low level library
of parts that support drawing the kind of block diagrams from the DSP
literature. Some things are missing out of the box, like FFT blocks.
And standard analog computer things are mostly there. However, I prefer
Max/MSP because to me it seems more orthogonal in the set of blocks that
are provided. It's more like programming a digital computer if you need
that power or convenience. Essentially, Max/MSP is probably the best
hybrid analog/digital computer you can get right now. Especially with
Gen, which lends itself well to implementing sample-level processing.
Oh, and you get FFT and IFFT blocks that do the over and undersampling
for you transparently. Max has a different focus than Reaktor
traditionally, it's more open in that it provides lots of interfaces to
various protocols and offers extensibility through different means. For
putting together patches out of reasonably familiar building blocks, I'd
say that Reaktor comes out first, although Max/MSP now has similar
capabilities thanks to BEAP.
