Chemical etching is another option that is less of a nightmare from a DIY
perspective.
-Cut panel to size
-brush lacquer on panel
-scrape lacquer off with etching tools
-let the panel sit in a small acid bath
-wash panel
-remove lacquer
-Voila, DIY etched panel that won't give you cancer in the process.
There is a local guy who does with his home brew guitar pedals. If you
actually push the imprecision as a "feature" then it can look really good.
I wish I could find the guy's website, because his pedals look really cool.
