What are some examples of modules that follow such a layout? The opposite
seems much more common to me - but I only really know Eurorack, so maybe
this is a difference between formats. Among the Eurorack modules I've
owned and looked at, inputs left/outputs right is a pretty solid
convention; all inputs and outputs for a subunit grouped together is
common too, with the overall arrangement of subunit groups possibly
arbitrary; but within such a group, if inputs and outputs are not
arranged horizontally next to each other (with outputs on the
right...) then inputs are at least 90% of the time above outputs.
