[sdiy] Front panel design philosophies

This may be more appropriate for Electro-Music or Muffwiggler or something, but I tend to find those sites overwhelming, so I have an urge to inquire of the smart minds here…

Some module front panels have inputs on the left and outputs on the right.

Some module front panels tend to have inputs on the bottom and outputs on the top.

Where did the input on the bottom, output on top convention come from? I’m not sure why to be but it somehow feels more intuitive to me to have inputs on the top and outputs on the bottom. Like the audio is flowing with gravity or something, maybe.
