Don,

The Mackie 1604 is full of 'em. That's not anywhere close to the oldest, of course.
Buchla 205 and 206 do it. Those are around 1970. Funny enough, the 106 and 207 have the pots the normal way. Those were from 1964 and 1978 respectively.

I'm sure Don Buchla didn't invent this technique. I'd guess it was done in analog computers or military stuff, where he got it.
