i prefer my madell hotplate to the ovens to work with, looks about the
same price, its easier to move around and check as its working, i
don't get the same hot/cold spots as i did with a target hot plate and
also higher temps. though an oven might do overhead heating better.
i usually cnc or laser cut stencils myself, or if its a longer run
have it included from the board house, then i setup a squeegee station
with some paste, then into the pick and place. i use water soluble
leaded paste.
i found the hardest part was just getting all the bits right, right
amount of paste, right type of paste, right consistency, sizing of the
holes on the stencil, pad layout and design for pasting etc. once that
was done i get decent results, i like it for the jellybeans mostly.
i'd like to explore the small run assembly house a bit more, our last
build was only 25 boards but it was crazy.
