A small bit.  I've been able to get a MIDI synth running in the PL
(Programmable Logic AKA FPGA) part.  Note that this does not use the
on-board codec.  I'm using a CS4344 DAC PMOD board for audio out and a
home-made PMOD MIDI connector with 6N138 for MIDI input.

I've also generated a small AXI4-Lite interface that I've tested, but
have not connected it to the synth yet.  I've done this using the older
ISE/EDK tools and not Vivado (in which I have almost no interest). 
I've taken a break from it for awhile and will likely get back into it
within the month.
