[sdiy] Wood working cv jacks!?

I had thought of just replacing the entire top with metal 
Are you suggesting that you I could instead just cover part of the wood with a piece of metal or brass  ?

That would mean I already have some suitable pieces 

Sorry if I'm having trouble with all of this , I'm not so great at carpentry !
