I was thinking along the same lines as Richie and bought a large RFI 
filter from Farnell. It arrived yesterday so I'll wire it into my audio 
system and see what effect it has.

Regarding earth spikes. It's a TN-C-S system - neutral is tied to earth 
prior to the service fuse. I am not aware of any supplementary 
connections to earth via any ground spike near the house - but that 
doesn't mean to say there isn't one somewhere on property.
