[sdiy] PPG Wave EVU information?

I have dumped myself into the deep end on a project....
I was asked "can you look at the MIDI on my EVU, which has a refit in
it?" and said yes.
The MIDI was a mess; wrong resistor values, broken connections, I
broke a pin on a weird socket extension and had to rebuild that, etc.
I have that all sorted, I think (No MIDI Thru as currently wired, but
I'll be taking care of that soon enough). So I figured I would turn
it on and see whether it appears to work.
All I get is a hum. First power on it pops a bit and then settles at
a low level.
As I dig around in the documentation I can find about this beast I
realize there are a number of possible causes. 1) the MIDI still
isn't wired right and is interfering with functionality, 2) I managed
to break something, 3) it wasn't working when I got it (kicking myself
over not testing it before touching the insides).
3 breaks down further into a) something wrong with the electronics, b)
it doesn't have the right OS installed to use the MIDI and that's
causing issues. I'm sure there are a number of variations on all
these that are less obvious.
Anyone have any good resources for this? I've found various Wave
2.2 and 2.3 manuals, but it appears some interpolation is necessary to
apply them to the EVU, and I have been unable so far to find an EVU
specific service manual.
Thanks
Pete
