Thanks for your replies. Before I dive in, a few things I guess
I should have mentioned :

- I know it's often done with an IC but I'm interested in doing
  it without one.

- I'm reluctant to do anything with the base of the transistor
  in case it affects the rest of the circuit.

- My ASCII art is fine ; it just needs, like all ASCII art, to
  be viewed with a fixed-width font.

Proportional font are doubly evil : not only they will prevent
you from viewing other people's ASCII art, but any ASCII art you
do with them will look skewed to anyone who has anything but the
exact same proportional font you do.
