The flanges are for stiffness. Without them, you'd need 3 mm
thick aluminium (like MOTM), not 1.5 mm as here.
One of the flanges can also hold the PCB. Removes the need for a
bracket but makes fabrication more difficult if you don't have a
notching machine. You have to cut perhaps 30 cm of metal and you
cannot use a shear. I wonder how Jean-Pierre does it.
Interesting decision to duplicate the original panel design.
Those 3 knobs and 5 jacks would easily fit in half the space.
