Hi Richard,

I would use 48khz as DVDs are more likely to outlast cd's. SD DVD is 48khz , 44.1 is a bother as it requires a separate clk src.

Most dsp's have limited memory, but ASRC can help convert 44.1 / 48khz.

Having built many synths, I think 44.1 or 48k is fine for sampling audio and not missing any real significant information.

DSP is usually not too burdened by Osc. , filters, VCE, etc. code, ASRC can be a bit more intensive.  

More examples can be given if you need examples.
