But that's assembly. Modding by Average Joe is another story. :-)

Sounds like special tools to me... and to Average Joe.
Sure SMT is "better" for many professionals, especially during
assembly - and much much harder for the many many ones who are not in
that league. Holemount on the other hand is easily managed by
newcomers, and not hard at all for pros - even if they prefer SMT even
more.
So, can't we agree that holemount is better if *people* are supposed
to service the gear? And that SMT is better for production and if
SMT-wizards are suppose to work on it? It's two different things...
good for all, or best for some. 0:-)

0805, that's huge... ;-) I work with 0402 in synths every day. It's
quite nice once you get used to the stereo microscope and the
steady-hand operations. And it's fascinating how small you can build
stuff. What I definitely don't appreciate while servicing & measuring
is that SMT sits on just one side of the board, and that there are no
values marked on the small components. Large drawbacks compared to
hole-mount, even if I wouldn't recommend something else than SMT for
new products. :-)
