In my case once I had the right tools SMT is much easier to work
with. Assembly goes 2x faster simply from not having to dress and clip
lead wires. Substituting things like resistors and caps takes half the
time as you just use the hot forceps to dismount a part, and install
another part.
They only problem in my case is my aging eyes have a hard time with
parts smaller than 0805. Dropping an SMT part is a bit of a trade-off
though: you will have a real fun time searching for it, but at least it
won't be found by a bare foot stepping on a lead. ;)
