I've taken up the habit of taking whatever replacement battery I will use,
soldering long wires to it (watching my heat so I don't damage it),
wrapping it in shrink tubing and locating it far from any part where a
leak can cause damage.  It's no guarantee but it's cheap insurance.
Cleaning battery leakage is a PITA.
