Thanks for all the tips and hints. I tried the method Tony described and 
the result looks good. I will skip idea of multiple turns through the 
solder lug. T
To avoid flying solder when removing the wire from the solder lug I 
usually use desoldering braid or the solder sucker to remove the tin, 
then I use stainless steel tweezers to remove the wire/strands. I avoid 
flying stuff at all times because you never know where it ends, 
until...... you switch on the power.
