I know. But the manufacturer will only claim those long retention times 
for "authorized" equipment.

Which of course is only fair. During my AMD/Vantis times I once asked 
why we wouldn't give out the programming specs for the PAL, PALCE and 
MACH devices like Lattice did for the GALs (which IMO gave them a huge 
advantage). The bottom line was that Lattice had a fair amount of 
backfire for "crappy" chips which in the end turned out to be just 
badly programmed.

Of course, today things are easier with e.g. self-identifying EPROMs 
allowing the programmer to be adjusted automatically (or at least 
telling on-screen what parameters to set), assuming that the eprommer 
software supports those protocols.
