wait a couple of years and even samplers will be considered as "that

I have went thru this recently and it's impossible to get drop-in
replacement smaller than 27C256. I siply rewire here and there, and
works OK in old 2764 socket. More choices are in SMD but then you need
adapter PCB.
There's new hope in FRAM and RRAM, although EPROM is still strong.
Microchip claims 200 years data retention in their eproms.
