the Matrix 6 and Matrix 1000 don't respond to all the same MIDI
messages so there are significant differences between their
firmwares.

They don't have the same front panels so they the may have
completely different electronics. Could be that, on the Matrix
1000, writing 0x12 to I/O register 0x34 prepares for reading a
front panel switch but on the Matrix 6R, it shorts two output
ports...

This also applies to the M6 vs. M6R, by the way. It would be
pretty perverse but we've all seen worse.

Maybe the experts on the oberheim list know ?
