1. It requires an explanation.  :-)

2. It's better to use a proper ground for a signal ground.

3. Gotta watch current going into or out of the fake ground.

4. There may be power-up issues.

5. There may be overdrive issues.

I would not have done it that way.  Assuming the 44V Siliconix switches were not available or cost effective at the time, I would have just run the audio and digital circuitry off of +/- 7 V and do whatever was necessary to make the digital lines work.
