When I was in high school I compared the sound of a diode ring modulator to one based on the MC1496, and the difference was huge, night and day. The diode implementation sounded harsh and squawky while the 1496 sounded like sweet outer space. :-)
The 1496 implementation is especially musical because the diff amps stages overdrive so gracefully. Y'know, similar to the Moog Ladder Filter.
