My "ring modulator" design (which became the Intellijel uMod) uses two
cross-modulated 2164-based linear VCAs.  There are one or two other similar
ones on the market, I believe.  I sell a handmade board for that (called the
Multiplying Modulator) primarily for use in 5U systems.  $15, with all
jumpers installed.  It's a fun and easy build.
