At six? well, my daughter soldered beautiful joints at the age of 2, I 
only helped her to hold the heavy transformer soldering gun. Real 
hot-as-hell tool in tiny hands of a little kid, what kind of a parent am I?

Anyway, in my case it was mostly wathing my dad soldering some radios or 
whatever he did. And I think that is the strongest driving factor. So 
you can even skip the book and just show how to do it in real life.
DIY articles in kids magazine and DIY TV show for kids only did the rest 
for me. Sad thing, they are discontinued long time ago.
I don't do any electronics at home any more, so I'm affraid it will not 
be the same in this generation.
