I’m teaching my kids electronics with Denshi Blocks:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denshi_block

Its an absolutely wonderful way to learn - the kids get a lot of fun out of the activity of assembling the circuit, and the description in the manual for how the circuit works is usually pretty laid out - plus, if you do the circuits in order, you learn the basics with a simple circuit that evolves over time ..

Definitely check them out if you haven’t already - you can buy good Densih block systems on EBay all the time, and if you ever run into a Gakken EX system (with the synth chip) you can add a bit of knowledge about synthesis to the effort to boot! :)
