The problem is that the ratio of parasites to fair-players isn't in the favour of the fair-players any longer. The sharing is a two-way street, and when goodwill is abused it is generally withdrawn. I know from experience that putting things in the public domain generates a level of 'noise' that can be very distracting. I also have private mail 'conversations' with people that are open and very rewarding. Fortunately this list i free of the parasites, but Google doesn't vet it's users before sending them to your website.
As a final example of the distraction that can arise form publishing work, read this from Muffs http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=109522 I admire what Olivier has done and how he has gone about it, but there is always someone pushing for more….
