Dave Dixon used to offer up his circuits if you sent him an email.  I never asked, so don't know if he asked for some sort of NDA, but even if not, this method allowed him to track when and to whom he released his IP, thereby providing a fairly open environment with a measure of disincentive for the untrustworthy.
