I could probably give synths my 100% undivided attention if my wife had her old hospital job with GREAT health coverage. But she has trouble being on her feet 12hrs/day now (she is 57 and has mild arthritis). And it paid $43/hr as well. She worked 2 12/hr shifts a week and got insurance (not "free", but something silly like $54/month cost). Only downside is in a hospital, no such thing as a "holiday" (she worked 3 of the last 4 Christmas Eves).
What happens when leaving a 'real' job is knowing even if you have a crummy boss/lousy week of craptastic meetings and hassles, you STILL GET PAID.
When doing the synth job: no work, no $$$. And you only get paid "at the very end" (15-30 days after you ship the order). There is no "steady income" unless you set yourself up to be paid every 2 weeks, but that is an illusion as many weeks my paychecks sit on the shelf as I wait for the money to show up (like my last 4 of them right now).
The upside is being a version of Steve Jobs, no one can over-ride your opinion/actions. YOU decide what to do and HOW to do it. And for a lot of people, this simple fact alone over-rides the $$$ aspect/uncertainty.
