Neurosky has a decent API with pre-processing of alpha etc levels, and should give much better results than custom hardware. It's already been used for (not very interesting, IMO) academic music projects.

Of course EEG control != thought control. The closest thing to thought control are the various artificial limb systems that have been built. I suspect it's easier to pick up and process motor impulses than it is to pull out an equivalent signal from a standard EEG.

Abstract Neuromancer-style interfacing probably isn't possible without invasive very dense monitoring of the entire neo-cortex.

That thing is *complicated* with six different levels in a very thin sheet. You could do a lot with 3D monitoring at 1mm physical resolution, but that's nowhere close to being practical today.
