You mean where the bytes are changes to the output level rather than
output level itself? I thought of that too and it's not.
I can take an existing drum WAV sample and modify to fit 12-bit along
with this RFC 3190 "compression" and it's pretty reminiscent of the
original. You can see in my latter photo that it would be. But
distorted enough from original to be a no-go.
I think it is some kind of Chord/Step or fixed point thing. Floating
point seems too sophisticated for this period. At this point we haven't
even seen 16-bit drum machines (HR-16) for instance.
