It's worse than that.
According to a discussion with a UPS rep, the HMRC calculate VAT on
the *documented* *full* *price* of the item you bought.
Let's say you buy a Euro module from Analogue Haven at 75% discount,
and the invoice quotes the full price and the discount as a separate
item. E.g.:
1. module FOOBER $200
2. 75% discount $150
ORDER TOTAL $50
So HMRC would use the full $200 amount on which to calculate VAT.
Nice.
I got hit by this when Freescale sent over some free dev tools and
other goodies for Synth DIY raffle prizes. Freescale's order
fullfilment people enclosed an invoice showing the full price, and
then saying "SUPPLIED FREE OF CHARGE. TOTAL = $0.00".
And then I got hit with taxes for about £40 or so when it arrived.
Plus handling fee or course :(
