"...Now that's a circuit that is crying out for a little PIC with a comparator on it to get rid of all that messy logic.
You could clear up the two 4011's and the 4013 bistable, and probably reduce the number of op-amps too..."
I like this idea of being able to replace CMOS chips with a microprocessor. Are there any tutorials or other documentation that might help me match a microprocessor program to a chip or work out how to eliminate chip(s) as per Tom's suggestions?
I tried a search on Ecosia (plant a tree) as well as google with :
simulating cmos chips with a microprocessor
simulating cmos chips with a pic microprocessor
emulating cmos chips with a microprocessor
emulating cmos chips with a pic microprocessor
However nothing useful turned up.

It so happened to day that I was looking at a Dummies electronics book in the bookshop and they gave a circuit for a gate using two transistors, so I suppose I could work it out from basic principles.
I have only dabbled with a MSP430 and despite some study have not yet produced anything that makes any kind of noise. I am pretty good with flashing LEDs in sequence and dimming them though, handy with the festive season coming up.
