I used the MAX1044 on an earlier project and "upgraded" to a LT1054 for the
Shruthi. It can be configured to work at a higher switching frequency, has
a built-in regulation capabilities (which I don't use), can deliver more
current, and tolerates higher input voltages.

One thing to be careful is that it is destroyed if the input voltage
exceeds 15V. This will happen more often than you'll expect with some cheap
unregulated 9V wall-warts people are going to power your device too. I've
seen some of these have output peaks at 16V even when loaded!
