Look into MELF or Mini-MELF resistors.

They're essentially the same resistor body as a 1/4 W or 1/8 W thru-hole, but instead of wire leads, they have little metal caps on the ends body, for surface mount attachment.  In quantity, 1% 1/4W's are priced about like thru hole ones.
