[sdiy] Pre-test of SMD Soldering Job

You can check for shorts between adjacent pins with a DMM if you want, but
if the soldering looks good under a magnifier during a visual inspection i'd
be tempted to give it a whirl.
You might get some odd resistance readings on your DMM if the output voltage
is sufficient to forward bias some of the internal workings of the CODEC, so
don't expect to see particularly high resistance readings. Also don't be
suprised if you get a different resistance reading if you reverse the
polarity of the meter leads! Some DMMs have a special "in circuit
resistance measurement" setting that uses a lower output voltage than
normal, supposedly so as not to forward bias any internal P-N junctions and
stuff. This may help if you have the "LV" option available. Either way a
modern DMM is not likely to put out sufficient voltage or current to damage
the device, and a solder-bridge should clearly show up as a dead-short
(probe lead resistance only.)
I'd be more inclined to worry about anti-static handling precautions than
damage from DMM testing. I'd work on a grounded anti-static mat if you have
one, and don't fidget or shuffle your feet across nylon carpet! ;-)
Good luck,
-Richie,
