I've seen enough failed sockets (both leaf and finger contact types) from
that era in my synths and some industrial control and measurement equipment
so that this has become generally the second thing I look for when they
start to act up right after checking the PSU. The assumption that the
current crop of sockets is any better is unproven and personally I don't see
any reason why this would be so. I do use sockets for throw-away projects
when it is likely that I'll pull the IC (although I might just do those on
solderless breadboard these days), but I don't fool myself into thinking
they're reliable. If you think otherwise, talk to me 15 years or so later.

Regards,
Achim.
