If you don't like the connectors, use XLRs like on the old Voyetras. 
Also, what exactly do you need higher control resolution for?  I don't 
think I've ever seen a synth that transmits or recognises 14-bit pitch 
bend data, and that's about the only thing I can think of where you'd 
want really tiny steps.
