well, as always - it depends!
Of course this existing thirty year old, slow, unidirectional, galvanically isolated connection is somewhat foolproof.
So there are many sources of mistakes and errors in a complex digital network environment - but then again, 
it's proofed that time-critical protocols indeed do work in networks, if set up accordingly.
I don't think it's the designers intention to make it "Internet-proof". ;-)
Just let's see and wait what's coming up.
