As Andrew said, sending a NOTE ON with a velocity of zero on key
release has the advantage of letting you use running status. A
synth as old as the original DX7 did that and I never heard of
it causing problems.

What Richard said. NOTE ONs can be stacked so NOTE OFFs (or NOTE
ONs with zero velocity) can be too. I don't remember if it's a
FIFO or a LIFO, but it's definitely a stack.
