Not optimum, but as a renter, I have always used this low-cost option:

Find an old wooden desk.
Attach 2x4 verticals to the legs on each corner.
Run more 2x4 across front & back.
Attach old door across the top.
Put strip light under door.
And some shelving at the back for test gear.

If the desk is a 'keeper', put thin particle board on top so you don't have 
to worry
about burn holes, spilt blood etc.

The LEAST ideal bench I ever saw was a fold-down board hinged to the back of 
a door,
with a leg to prop it up when folded down. The guy managed to build a synth 
on it, even so.
