That's why cooperatives are a much better business model than companies or corporations. The benefit being to *all* the stakeholders is written into the articles of association from the beginning.

Companies only *have* to make money for the shareholders. If they can screw the employees for more work and less pay, and screw the customers for more money for less quality in the goods, they will, and they frequently do. Since success for these businesses is measured in raw "share return" terms, it's almost inevitable that they'll go in that direction.

The UK does pretty well for cooperative businesses. The Coop supermarkets are a major player, and also Britain's largest farmer. Then there's the Coop bank, John Lewis department stores, who also run Waitrose, the Wine Society, etc etc. We don't actually need businesses that *only* exist to make money.
