That may be fine for maintaining existing synths, but it is not viable
for a new product.

"These chips were used in classic analogue synthesizers, for example
in the Oberheim Matrix 12 / expander. The linearity and temperature
stability were excellent. The chips are no longer manufactured, but
some distributors still have most of them in stock (but for how
long?). Onchip systems (the major distributor) have stated that they
will manufacure more chips when they have preorders for at least 25000
pieces."
At $15 per chip (same web page), you would need to place an order for
$375,000 of chips before they'll manufacture some wafers through the
production line. So, again, economics.
