Are there any examples of people building replacements for these? There was this bro who built lots of new memory for Yamaha synths http://www.sector101.co.uk/
This photo shows how simple the circuits are. One TC5517APL-2 CMOS static RAM IC (2048 word by 8 bit), a battery, a switch, two resistors and a diode.

I assume there is no configuration done to the RAM, it's done in parallel from the synth. You can still get the RAM chips on ebay, so I presume you could build a direct clone.
