[sdiy] EE degrees course content - transistors?

A question for those of you with EE or equivalent degrees...

...how much time did you spend in course working with larger transistor-based circuits e.g. 'discrete' op-amps, OTA's, computing and logic circuits, etc. - as opposed to working with their 'hardware' equivalents e.g. standard Op-Amps, Logic chips, etc (and as opposed to working with the basic transistor building blocks of e.g. buffer, amplifier, etc.)?
