I found some expensive but robust Amphenol mini-D USB sockets - the
MUSB-B551-04. There is a page of photos and links at:

Anyone doing USB links in musical equipment might want to electrically
isolate the link to prevent ground noise and to avoid or at least
greatly reduce potential problems with static damage to USB ports. I
have used this remarkable chip with great success:
AMD ADuM4160

It has five little transformers built into the multi-chip arrangement.
