[sdiy] Analogue sound over HDMI or (Mini) DisplayPort cable?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone considered using HDMI or Mini DisplayPort
cables for carrying analog multitrack signals. Most likely I'd like to
push the audio over the cable in differential mode (1 pair per
channel).

I understand most of those cables are 32 AWG, likely twisted pair. I
am not sure, but I believe you can get ones where pairs are
individually shielded.

I am mostly interested in mini-dp cables, but HDMI and DisplayPort
should have yielded similar experiences, so if you've done anything
with them, please chime in. I can only imagine they're all made with
the same or nearly the same cable types between the two connectors.

Those cables are nice because the connectors are very robust and very
importantly self-correcting. I believe this means they're much more
likely to withstand constant removal and mating than DB-25 or Amphenol
which are the defacto standards in cheap multitrack cables. Mini-DP
has a much nicer connector, but HDMI might have more cable types
(shielding, stranding, etc) available.

We're talking about distances of normally 0.5m and up to 2-3m. This is
for quick patching.

Have you tried doing this? What was the crosstalk like? Was the cable
able to withstand the voltages and currents of pro-level equipment?
Does the cable need special termination or impedance correction to
e.g. prevent crosstalk or EMI?

Cheers,
D.
