[sdiy] google sketchup

The first thing I wanted to do when I tried Sketchup was to draw a Clark Y
airfoil.
I couldn't. I think I needed to buy/load a special add on tool or
something.
I remain frustrated at learning such tools. Later Google sold it and I
don't know what's happened with it since.

Hi Jim!
Yes, Google Sketchup is a very nice 3D CAD.
I also started with it a few weeks ago as I want to plan my CNC with it.
Don't forget to have a look at the online library - lots of useful parts can
be found there.
Also you are invited each time to give your models on this library for other
users.
If you want to design moving parts like robots then there are useful plugins
like Sketchup physics that can logically join parts.
On the part sector some companies already started to support the Google
Sketchup format so that you don't have to design every small part on your
own.
For beginners I recommend the tutorial videos on the Google sketchup site
and the are also a lot of tutorial videos on Youtube. On youtube you can
find a lot of special tasks that are not covered by the beginner tutorials.
Have fun with Sketchup!
For 3D animations Google sketchup doesn't deliver a good quality.
But you don't have to buy the full version just for this task.
Save the animations as single PNG frames and make the animation out of these
single frames with a seperate tool.
Animations in full HD in nice quality are possible this way.
Also static model look very nice if you just go around the object...
Ciao
Peter

For those who might need a mechanical drawing program, I just started using
Google Sketchup. There is a free version that you can download.
It is fairly easy to use. I did a drawing of a panel with it pretty easily.
I used to use Turbo Cad, or tried to. I could never get the hang of it.
