[sdiy] mini-din socket - panel mount?

The 161-381/4-E is indeed a mini-DIN. It looks just like the 4 pin picture
on the wiki page. I know it is mini because of the magnifiers I had to use
to solder wires to both it and the plug - they are small indeed. I didn't
want to use a DIN since I have MIDI connectors on the ComputerVoltageSource.
I kind of have regret my choice of mini-DIN since the plug doesn't stay in
all that secure. One has never fallen out, but I sure wish I could find the
mating plug with the threads to screw it in.

Dave and Paul,
those are DIN not Mini DIN. The following is a Mini din connector:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-DIN_connector
examples include the "small" ps/2 mouse and keyboard connectors (not the
large ones like for midi), S-Video, and some multi-voltage power supplies.
Ryan,
one way to do what you're trying is to use the existing hole to lead the
cables out into a small box that has the larger connector you'll want to
use. The box can be out of metal and have a flange integrated into it that
will screw the small box to the original chassis. This way you can always
unmod the synth to its original state. The whole contraption can be very
stable. You'd put a rubber washer around the flange, between the small box
and the original chassis.
Cheers,
D.
