If you're looking at low-voltage and low-current circuits then IDC is
definitely effective. As always check the specs of the parts you are
going to buy. One nice thing about IDC connectors is that, even with
a vice and a bit of care and attention, you're very likely to make a
very good crimp connection.
Regarding long term use, it really depends on the operating
environment. A dry, stable room temperature environment will be
great, sloshing around in salty water on a ship's deck at extremes of
temperature is not so good. If your environment will experience some
vibration (perhaps a portable modular?), then I'd suggest using the
latching headers for improved header retention.
And as Paul says, they've been used in computers for decades!
